Are there any high quality tomato pastes available in supermarkets

Supermarkets seem to only stock brands of tomato paste like Hunts and Contadina. Are there any better brands out there for paste? For regular tomatoes, it's not as hard to find better stuff, but it's slim pickings for paste.

Andrew, there aren't that many unfortunately. Muir Glen, which is a supermarket brand, is a little better than your Hunts or Contadina. There is a brand called Mutti which is quite nice and is becoming a little more common. I've seen it at some Safeway locations, Fresh and Easy (California chain) and Cost Plus markets.

Cento is another good brand. The basic Cento products (sauce, crushed tomatoes, plum tomatoes) are pretty easy to find. Cento tomato paste might be less common. If you live near an Italian deli, you might take a look there. Chances are they'll have a some decent choices.

Like Raj said, it is pretty difficult to find descent tomato paste. Never tried Muir Glen or Mutti but hear good things. I have been using Delallo tomato paste which I found at Sprouts and that has been my favorite one so far.

I have seen Cento paste in tubes at Von's/Safeway grocery stores.
