Trouble with Stand Mixer

Whenever I mix dough in my KitchenAid, a ball forms around the hook and it just spins around. It doesn't seem like there's any kneading taking place. Is this normal when using a mixer to make dough?

The amount and type of dough being prepared in your mixer can impact how it performs.

In general, with home stand mixers, it's very easy for the dough to ball up around the hook. When this happens, I stop the mixer and pull the dough off the hook. During a typical mix, I end up doing this at least 3-5 times.

It's a little bit of a nuisance, but I find that my dough has been much more thoroughly kneaded this way.

I agree with Raj. Yes, it is totally normal. When you pull the dough off the hook, drop the hook back to one side of the dough rather than in the middle of it and see if that helps.

William,

see if your model and bowl is deep enough for a spiral hook.

If you have a "C"-shaped dough hook it will just slap the dough around no matter how large the batch is. I used the KAs before and got rid of them, especially when they switched from metal gears to plastic ones.

Look at the Bosch mixers, Cuisinart or the more expensive Viking series.
